Austin Critics Table Winners!

The Austin Critics' Table Awards were announced at a ceremony on June 7 and Rampant artists received two of the major awards: Forklift Danceworks' The Trash Project won for Best Dance Concert and Golden Hornet Project's Symphony VI won for Best Symphonic Concert . In addition, Graham Reynolds received the John Bustin Award for Conspicuous Versatility and Don Anderson received The Graced in the Machine Award for his performance of “The Crane Dance” in The Trash Project.

Tosca Triumphs

GHP's presentation of Tosca with Rostam Batmanglij was a commercial and artistic triumph. Both shows played to capacity audiences and the breadth of material and quality of the playing inspired two standing ovations.

Allison Orr of Forklift Danceworks and Graham Reynolds kicked off the 2010 Fusebox Festival on the steps of the state capitol on April 21st. Celebrating the two-step's rich cultural history while showcasing local dancers who love and live for the two-step, the show featured a 14 piece western swing orchestra led by Graham, guests vocalists Dale Watson and Christina Marrs of Asylum Street Spankers. Austin360.com shot a great video report, including an interview with Allison and has a great set of photos.

Project Forklift Sells Out

Forklift Danceworks' Project Forklift sold out all five performance. Artistic DIrector Allison Orr invited 5 of her favorite choreographers to create pieces in the inimitable Forklift style. Dancers included massage therapists, waiters and waitresses and an Austin police officer. Read the Austin American Statesman's feature!

Symphony VI A Rousing Success

Golden Hornet Project's Symphony VI sold out both of its performances on February 6. World premieres of The Difference Engine by Graham Reynolds and Rough Night With Happy Ending by Peter Stopschinksi were greeted with standing ovations, as was the regional premiere of Popcorn Superhet Receiver by Jonny Greenwood. Forklift Danceworks' The Trash Project was listed as 2009's #1 Art Happening by Jeanne Claire Van Rizen of The Austin American Statesman, the #1 Dance and Classical Music Treasure of 2009 by Robert Faires of The Austin Chronicle, and given two listings by Jonelle Seitz of The Austin Chronicle, one for Don's Anderson's Crane Solo and a second for the entire show, in her Top 9 Lasting Impressions in Dance from 2009.

Wings with World Premiere Score

On June 23 at 8pm, Graham Reynolds will premiere his new score for the silent classic Wings at Austin's Paramount Theatre. The first winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, this 1927 film stars Clara Bow, Richard Arlen and Charles "Buddy" Rogers in a tale of love and loss among World War I fighter pilots. One of the first films shot in Texas, it also features Gary Cooper in a small role that launched his Hollywood career.

Phillips' latest release I Was Just Comforting Her will have its world premiere at Frameline 34, San Francisco's big LGBT film festival. The screening is at 3:45pm, Saturday, June 26. The video stars Dominique Dibbell, Jamie Tolbert Franklin, Phranc (pictured left to right).

Steinway to Hell

GHP's co-artistic directors will face off at Pete's Dueling Piano Bar on Sunday, July 11 at 7pm. Duking it out piano a piano at Austin's favorite dueling piano bar, Graham and Peter will play thier own compositions plus music from Stravinsky, Journey, Ellington, and more.
