The Asylum Street Spankers juice their acclaimed live show with a double shot of theatricality in their new stage production, "What? And Give Up Show Biz?"

A musical revue and memoir of the troupe's fourteen year history, the show features many of the most popular songs in their large repertoire along with tales of the ups and downs of life on the road. From brushes with death to the tiny triumphs found pursuing one's muse, the segments between musical numbers shed light on the inner working of a drummer's brain, the optimal drug doses for various musical genres and the terrifying reality of being the sole woman in a van full of musicians.

"What? And Give Up Show Biz?" contains adult humor, including frank discussions of sexuality, drug use and/or rock and roll. It also contains four part harmonies, blues, country, pop, jazz, rock and hip hop songs, inventively clever arrangements, and a musical saw.

Like the result of George Carlin, Groucho Marx, Bessie Smith and Hank Williams starting a band and travelling the world in a van for ten years, this is equal parts social commentary, farce, soul and genius.

"What? And Give Up Show Biz?" premiered at New York's Barrow Street Theatre as the anchor of their 2008 Fortnight Theatre Festival. Contact
